In my last blog post, I discussed the connection between values and goals – and why it’s so important to align them. When we know our values, we can define goals that truly suit us. But how do we achieve these goals and stay motivated over the long term?
One proven method for manifesting our goals is visualization. For me personally, a vision board is the perfect tool to effectively and creatively put this method into practice. It helps me make my dreams tangible and reminds me daily of what matters to me and what I’m working towards.
Why Visualization Is So Powerful and How a Vision Board Supports You
Visualization is a powerful tool that helps you not only define your dreams and goals but also achieve them. Studies show that our brain can hardly distinguish between real and imagined experiences. When you vividly imagine your goal – for example, how it feels to achieve it – this activates neural networks typically used for real experiences. This stimulates your subconscious to find ways to make this vision a reality.
At the same time, visualization strengthens your emotional connection to your goals, boosting your motivation and helping you overcome challenges. In short, it directs your mental focus to the positive and what you want to achieve, instead of obstacles or uncertainties.
A vision board can support you by:
Focusing on what matters: It helps you clarify your priorities and concentrate on your most important goals.
Activating your subconscious: By visually representing your goals, you imprint them more deeply and increase the likelihood of staying on track.
Boosting motivation: Seeing your vision board daily reminds you of your dreams and motivates you to pursue them.
Enhancing positive emotions: Visualizing success triggers optimism and anticipation, which keep you moving forward.
How to Create Your Own Vision Board
I recently created my own vision board:

Creating your vision board is often a creative and inspiring process. Set aside time for it and make yourself comfortable – with a cup of tea, relaxing music and anything that inspires you.
Step-by-Step Guide
Gather your materials: Use a pinboard, a large sheet of paper, magazines, scissors, glue, markers or printouts.
Define your goals: Think about what you want to achieve in areas like career, health or personal development. Other topics could include travel or relationships/friendships. Write down your goals – clearly, concretely and aligned with your values. (read more in my latest blog post: Setting Goals That Fit You: How to Focus on Your Values)
Find inspiring images and quotes: Browse magazines or the internet for pictures and words that symbolize your goals.
Design your vision board: Arrange everything in a way that feels right to you. Your vision board should create an emotional connection with you.
Place it visibly: Hang your board somewhere you see it daily – for example, in your workspace or bedroom.
Digital Alternatives
If you prefer not to create a physical vision board, there are excellent digital options. Tools like Canva or Pinterest allow you to design vision boards virtually – perfect for when you're on the go or want a sustainable alternative.
Using Your Vision Board in Everyday Life
To ensure your vision board has its full impact, actively integrate it into your daily routine:
Daily visualization: Look at your board every day and imagine how it feels to achieve your goals.
Regular updates: Revise your vision board as your dreams or priorities change.
Share it with others: Talk about your visions with friends – shared goals create extra motivation.
